Waterfall at Cloudland Canyon - Photo by Heather Wall It was a gorgeous day, the weather was warm and sunny, and since it was a weekday there were almost no people on the trails. We visited three separate falls, each only a mile or two hike. Last week was my birthday, so Andrew and I loaded up Oscar and went on a short Tour de Waterfalls in the nearby foothills. Why is this? Why are we so fascinated by water moving from a higher location to a lower one? Why are we drawn to visit when we could otherwise be terrified by them, or just plain bored? People hike long trails just to see the waterfall at the end. Good for those who can't do much walking, but still like the trail experience. There’s just something about visiting a waterfall, isn’t there? The sound of the water cascading over rocks, the turbulent, boiling water in the pool below, the mist blowing on your face, the pure energy evident in the roar of the water. The fall is about 40 meters high and also part of the Yellowstone River System. ![]() If you are a fan of the artist Thomas Moran (his sketches and watercolors helped make Yellowstone into the first National Park), you will want to make time to visit this area. A general store is nearby with restrooms and it sells food, drinks and souvenirs. There are trees that partially block the view but the falls can still be seen. Wheelchair access may be difficult due to the poor condition of the trail. There is a short asphalt trail that leads to the overlook but is in bad shape so watch your step. The lot is on a curve so you’ll need to be careful when leaving. The parking lot has several parking spots but can fill quickly so I recommend visiting early or late. Tower Fall is on the Grand Loop Road between Canyon and Roosevelt.
